In this Tutorial I will show you how to use Starter software – A Drive Commissioning software that is provided by Siemens.
- How to create an offline project
- How to get the parameters from the online drive.
Starter?
Starter is a commissioning tool that helps you to commission with Siemens S120,G120,Etc drives/Set or Read the parameters/View the diagnostic information.

Installation Trouble
Create Offline Project
Open the starter and create a new project.
Press insert single drive unit.
Choose your Drive Family.
In this tutorial Sinamics CU240E-2 PN is used. Please match the firmware with the drive.
you can check the firmware by CF card that is inserted inside the drive.
For the IP, please match with your TIA/Step7 Classic project.
Confugure Drive unit.
Choose the order numbers and Next.
Enter the Checkbox of “Then start commissioning wizard” and Finish.
Choose your application class.
0=Expert, User define
1=Stand Drive Control,(pump,Fan..)
2=Dynamic Drive Control(Conveyor with Encoder,Lifter..)
Choose the wiring setting.
No Change is chosen in my tutorial.
Choose your Motor Type and supply voltage value.
Choose your Motor Type(Induction motor..etc)
We will enter the motor data directly from the nameplate,
Select “Enter motor data” and Next>
Enter the Start/Delta wiring and the Rated current,voltage and rpm.
Enter the Limit Current value/Ramp up time..etc and next.
You can choose the Drive Function to match your application.For example Standard Drive/Heavy Drive.
Confirm all your setting and Finish.
Upload Project From Drive
Project>Accessible Nodes.
Starter will auto search the drives that connected in the network.
1.Enter the Checkbox with the drive that you found in starter.
2.Press accept.
Drive is uploaded to your project.
Select the Drive that you uploaded in the previous step, press the online button.
Starter inform the user that offline programs and online programs are different.
Press “Load HW configuration to PG” to get the information from the Drive.
The Offline and Online projects are the same now.
Right click the Drive>Target device>Restore factory settings to restore the drive to factory settings.
A popup is shown from the starter.
Here is an information checkbox of “Save device parameterization to ROM after completion”.Siemens Drive had “RAM” and “ROM”,Ram is fast for access but data will be lost if power failure.ROM is retained but data access is slow.
If you assign the parameter online and do not save it From RAM to ROM, the parameters will return back after a power off and on.
In here, Check this box and press “Yes” to confirm it.
Commissioning
Click the Drive navigator after the factory reset is finished.
Click the Drive Configuration
Device configuration popup is shown.
Press the carry out configuration.
Yes.
Click the Commissioning Button.
The Drive Control Panel is Displayed in the Starter software.
Click the “Assume control priority” to get the control right of Drive.
“Assume Control priority” popup is shown.
Enter your Monitoring Time and press accept.
“Assume Control priority” is changed to yellow.
Check the Enable box to start the operation.
n=rpm input field is allowed to enter the value now.Let’s input 100 rpm and press the green button to run the drive.
You can turn off the drive by pressing the red button, and enter 0 in the n=rpm field.
Finally press the “Give up control priority!” Button to give up the control right from Starter software.
Popup of “Return Control priority” is shown.
If you give of the control right from Starter, the control Right will give back to the high level Controller and “May” run immediately while command is received.
It may be dangerous and please take care.
After you confirm all the conditions, Press yes to continue.
